Mediocre room, great breakfast
Oakland Cottage Bed & BreakfastOur room was cozy and cute in typical bed and breakfast style, but the bed was crammed into a narrow space so you had to turn sideways to squeeze through the gap between the bed and the wall, and the mattress was none too comfortable. Dogs are welcomed but not allowed in common areas. That said, it’s a great location and the food is terrific. I think my underwhelmed impression. We’d just come from a better room and more dog friendly accommodations at Hellbenders in Blowing Rock.
As expected
Sleep Inn StauntonBetter than average for this sort of joint. Kind of out in the middle of nowhere but clean and newish, with a pretty large grassy area for dogs. Bonus: guests seem to pick up poop because it was not a minefield.
Clean pet area
Best Western Plus Inn at Valley ViewThe plus means a lot. The hotel is about 5 miles from the heart of town, in the area of a shopping mall. The facilities were all spotless - even the dog relief area.
Basic hotel meets expectations
Super 8 by Wyndham Radford VAThis was a basic, well-run budget hotel.
Basic hotel
Red Roof Inn Asheville - Biltmore WestAs budget hotels go, it has everything you would expect. The bonus is there is a nice grassy area and if you walk up the road behind the hotel you are in a quiet residential area that’s good for dog walking.
Excellent but pricey
Lorien Hotel & SpaThe location, room and amenities are all solid - clean, efficient, well-appointed common spaces. I would give the place 5 bones but I feel like they're doing what's expected for what they charge, not going above and beyond.
Great location, excellent value
Inn on Main AnnapolisIt’s a small room over a diner, reminiscent of lodgings in an English pub. That said, it’s cosy and ultra convenient, right in the heart of the tourist area. Excellent find!
Lovely place
Sundogs Bed and BreakfastPeggy and David are great hosts and this is a truly dog-friendly spot: Everything from a blanket in case your dog sleeps on the bed to towels if he takes a swim in the creek. Despite that, the house, grounds and rooms are spotless and everything of the quality you would expect from a top-class hotel. One aspect that they don't emphasize in their marketing is that the food and beverages they provide are vegan.
Excellent service, bad customers
Best Western B. R. GuestThe hotel was very efficient and the staff was friendly and polite (don't expect the Ritz Carlton). However, the other dog-owners leave a lot to be desired. I signed a waiver acknowledging various rules, including an agreement that I would clean up after my dog. If anybody else signed it, they clearly ignored that rule: The grass around the hotel was a minefield of dog crap.
